...Guns 'N' Roses - Civil War:

"What we've got here is failure to communicate.

Some men you just can't reach...

So, you get what we had here last week,

which is the way he wants it!

Well, he gets it!

N' I don't like it any more than you men."

Look at your young men fighting

Look at your women crying

Look at your young men dying

The way they've always done before

Look at the hate we're breeding

Look at the fear we're feeding

Look at the lives we're leading

The way we've always done before

My hands are tied

The billions shift from side to side

And the wars go on with brainwashed pride

For the love of God and our human rights

And all these things are swept aside

By bloody hands time can't deny

And are washed away by your genocide

And history hides the lies of our civil wars

D'you wear a black armband

When they shot the man

Who said "Peace could last forever"

And in my first memories

They shot Kennedy

I went numb when I learned to see

So I never fell for Vietnam

We got the wall of D.C. to remind us all

That you can't trust freedom

When it's not in your hands

When everybody's fightin'

For their promised land

And

I don't need your civil war

It feeds the rich while it buries the poor

Your power hungry sellin' soldiers

In a human grocery store

Ain't that fresh

I don't need your civil war

Look at the shoes your filling

Look at the blood we're spilling

Look at the world we're killing

The way we've always done before

Look in the doubt we've wallowed

Look at the leaders we've followed

Look at the lies we've swallowed

And I don't want to hear no more

My hands are tied

For all I've seen has changed my mind

But still the wars go on as the years go by

With no love of God or human rights

'Cause all these dreams are swept aside

By bloody hands of the hypnotized

Who carry the cross of homicide

And history bears the scars of our civil wars

"We practice selective annihilation of mayors

And government officials

For example to create a vacuum

Then we fill that vacuum

As popular war advances

Peace is closer" **

I don't need your civil war

It feeds the rich while it buries the poor

Your power hungry sellin' soldiers

In a human grocery store

Ain't that fresh

And I don't need your civil war

I don't need your civil war

I don't need your civil war

Your power hungry sellin' soldiers

In a human grocery store

Ain't that fresh

I don't need your civil war

I don't need one more war

I don't need one more war

Whaz so civil 'bout war anyway

Another that's just occurred: Johnny Cash - Singin' in Vietnam Talkin' Blues

One mornin' at breakfast, I said to my wife,

We been everywhere once and some places twice,

As I had another helping of country ham,

She said "We ain't never been to Vietnam,

"And there's a bunch of our boys over there."

So we went - to the Orient: Saigon.

Well we got a big welcome when we drove in,

Through the gates of a place that they call Long Vinh.

We checked in and everything got kinda quiet,

But a soldier boy said: "Just wait 'til tonight,

"Things get noisy. Things start happenin'.

"Big bad firecrackers."

Well that night we did about four shows for the boys,

And they were livin' it up with a whole lot of noise.

We did our last song for the night,

And we crawled into bed for some peace and quiet,

But things weren't peaceful. And things weren't quiet.

Things were scary.

Well for a few minutes June never said one word,

And I thought at first that she hadn't heard.

Then a shell exploded not two miles away,

She sat up in bed and I heard her say: "What was that?"

I said: "That was a shell, or a bomb."

She said: "I'm scared." I said "Me too."

Well all night long that noise kept on,

And the sound would chill you right to the bone.

The bullets and the bombs, and the mortar shells,

Shook our bed every time one fell,

And it never let up; it was gonna get worse,

Before it got any better.

Well when the sun came up, the noise died down,

We got a few minutes sleep, an' we were sleepin' sound,

When a soldier knocked on our door and said:

"Last night they brought in seven dead, and 14 wounded."

And would we come down to the base hospital, and see the boys.

"Yes!"

So we went to the hospital ward by day,

And every night we were singin' away.

Then the shells and the bombs was goin' again.

And the helicopters brought in the wounded men.

Night after night; day after day.

Comin' and a goin'.

So we sadly sang for them our last song,

And reluctantly we said: "So long."

We did our best to let 'em know that we care,

For every last one of 'em that's over there.

Whether we belong over there or not.

Somebody over here love's 'em, and needs 'em

Well now that's about all that there is to tell,

About that little trip into livin' hell.

And if I ever go back over there any more,

I hope there's none of our boys there for me to sing for;

I hope that war is over with,

And they all come back home,

To stay.

In peace.

Country Joe McDonald - I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die-Rag

My own edit, as the only version I have is of the performance at Woodstock, anyway, here it is as best as I can manage.

Gimme an F!

F!

Gimme an U!

U!

Gimme an C!

C!

Gimme an K!

K!

What's that spell ?

FUCK!

What's that spell ?

FUCK!

What's that spell ?

FUCK!

What's that spell ?

FUCK!

What's that spell ?

FUCK!

Yeah, come on all of you, big strong men,

Uncle Sam needs your help again.

He's got himself in a terrible jam

Way down yonder in Vietnam

So put down your books and pick up a gun,

We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it's one, two, three,

What are we fighting for ?

Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,

Next stop is Vietnam;

And it's five, six, seven,

Open up the pearly gates,

Well there ain't no time to wonder why,

Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Now come on Wall Street, don't be slow,

Why man, this is war au-go-go.

There's plenty good money to be made

By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade,

Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,

They drop it on the Viet Cong.

And it's one, two, three,

What are we fighting for ?

Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,

Next stop is Vietnam.

And it's five, six, seven,

Open up the pearly gates,

Well there ain't no time to wonder why

Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Now come on generals, let's move fast;

Your big chance is here at last.

Now you can go out and get those reds —

The only good commie is the one that's dead

And you know that peace can only be won

When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.

Sing it! One, two, three,

What are we fighting for ?

Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,

"Louder!"

Next stop is Vietnam;

And it's five, six, seven,

Open up the pearly gates,

Well there ain't no time to wonder why

Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

"Listen people, I don't know how you expect to ever stop the war if you

can't sing any better than that; there's about three hundred thousand

of you fuckers out there. I want you to start singin'!"

Come on.

And it's one, two, three,

What are we fighting for ?

Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,

Next stop is Vietnam;

And it's five, six, seven,

Open up the pearly gates,

Well there ain't no time to wonder why

Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Now come on mothers throughout the land,

Pack your boys off to Vietnam.

Come on fathers, don't hesitate,

Send your sons off before it's too late.

Be the first one on your block

To have your boy come home in a box.

Alright!

...one, two, three

What are we fighting for ?

Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,

Next stop is Vietnam.

And it's five, six, seven,

Open up the pearly gates,

Well there ain't no time to wonder why,

Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

VH1 Takes a Look at the Inspirational Power of Music During Wartime with 'VH1 News Presents: Soundtrack To War' Premiering Wednesday, August 18 at 9PM*

Footage from 'Soundtrack To War' Can Be Seen in Michael Moore's 'Fahrenheit 9/11'

NEW YORK, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Gospel choirs with soaring choruses punctuated by background explosions. Prayers for safety expressed in the strums of country lullabies. The adrenaline-surging motivational power of speed metal. These are the sounds as heard and performed by the young U.S. soldiers fighting in Iraq.

"VH1 News Presents: Soundtrack to War" premiering Wednesday, August 18 at 9PM* introduces, through personal testimonies, the young and talented men and women experiencing the hell of war, and using music as inspiration while bullets fly. Australian filmmaker George Gittoes bypassed US military chaperones to gain unprecedented access to the soldiers on the frontlines of Baghdad, who confided in Gittoes how various songs help psyche them up before battle, such as Drowning Pool's Let the Bodies Hit the Floor, Mystikal's Round Out the Tank, and Outkast's Bombs over Baghdad. "Soundtrack to War" also showcases spontaneous music performances, without rehearsal, under the blaring Iraqi sun, surrounded by the spirit of a destroyed city. Here, the nation's military proves to be gifted performers, in genres that include R&B, country, gospel and even metal.

Clips from "Soundtrack To War" can be seen in the Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11."

Strange that nobody has posted this one yet...

Goodnight Saigon

The Nylon Curtain Released: 1982

We met as soul mates

On Parris Island

We left as inmates

From an asylum

And we were sharp

As sharp as knives

And we were so gung ho

To lay down our lives

We came in spastic

Like tameless horses

We left in plastic

As numbered corpses

And we learned fast

To travel light

Our arms were heavy

But our bellies were tight

We had no home front

We had no soft soap

They sent us Playboy

They gave us Bob Hope

We dug in deep

And shot on sight

And prayed to Jesus Christ

With all of our might

We had no cameras

To shoot the landscape

We passed the hash pipe

And played our Doors tapes

And it was dark

So dark at night

And we held on to each other

Like brother to brother

We promised our mothers we'd write

And we would all go down together

We said we'd all go down together

Yes we would all go down together

Remember Charlie

Remember Baker

They left their childhood

On every acre

And who was wrong?

And who was right?

It didn't matter in the thick of the fight

We held the day

In the palm

Of our hand

They ruled the night

And the night

Seemed to last as long as six weeks

On Parris Island

We held the coastline

They held the highlands

And they were sharp

As sharp as knives

They heard the hum of our motors

They counted the rotors

And waited for us to arrive

And we would all go down together

We said we'd all go down together

Yes we would all go down together

my submission is...

One-Metallica

I can't remember anything

Can't tell if this is true or dream

Deep down inside I feel the scream

This terrible silence stops at me

Now that the war is through with me

I'm waking up, I cannot see

That there is not much left of me

Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death

Oh please, God, wake me

Back in the womb it's much

too real

In pumps life that I must feel

But can't look forward to reveal

Look to the time when I'll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me

Just like a wartime novelty

Tied to machines that make me be

Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death

Oh please, God, wake me

Now the world is gone, I'm just one

Oh God, help me

Hold my breath as I wish for death

Oh please, God, help me

(instrumental break)

Darkness imprisoning me

All that I see

Absolute horror

I cannot live

I cannot die

Trapped in myself

Body my holding cell

Landmine has taken my sight

Taken my speech

Taken my hearing

Taken my arms

Taken my legs

Taken my soul

Left me with life in hell

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
