I have been meaning to defrag lately but it's such a pain in the ass.

First you have to wait 8 hours for scan disk to finish (in safe mode), then you have to defrag for another 8 (at least). It's really really REALLY time consuming.

Yep,

That's one of the reasons I don't defrag that often. Even with the most efficent defragmentation utilities, it seems to take forever.

I usually do my defragmentation at night while I sleep.

I have the thing sheduled to defrag a couple of times a week...overnight.... so I have no idea how long it takes... cant think of anything more dull than watching a hard drive defrag....

Try Diskeeper. It's a whole lot faster!!

I do ;)

Why does it take so long then? I use Diskeeper and it is a lot faster than that. But I don't defrag in safe mode. I have 3 hard drives. 100, 80 and 40gb. I can defrag all 3 of them in an hour or so.

I guess my hard drives are nearly full and are slow.

When I say "slow", I mean that they are old and have low a RPM.

Mine are like 3600 RPM hard drive or something like that.

I try to defrag when I'm not going to be home or when I'm sleeping. It seems that the more often I do it the less time it takes. On my 'dedicated' music production machine (aptly named CTC Command) I have to run defrag before working with some of the larger Acid files, or it just seizes up on me. Learned from experience to defrag often! :bonk

I run a very small C drive, and download to that. Once the downloads are done, i transfer them to my D drive defragging them in the process, hence i dont have to defrag my larger drive unless im really trying to muck things up. My C drive gets done whenever it needs it, which is not very often as it doesnt have much on it.

That's what I do too, Hunter. Use C to d/l, correct file names and ID3 tags, rip and so on. Then copy to another drive. The other drives rarely need defrag. C drive will defrag in 35 min.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
