Ron Burgundy is coming back to a theater near you and, according to director Adam McKay, he's going to be better than ever.

The "Anchorman 2" director spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and Salon about the long-anticipated sequel and said that he thinks he and Ferrell can make this movie even better than its predecessor.

"That's always the trick with the sequels, is how much do you repeat from the first one. Because we all get bummed out when you go see a sequel and it's beat for beat," he told THR. "[Will Ferrell and I] re-watched it for the first time in four or five years the other day. I had seen pieces of it on TV. But Will and I actually sat and watched the whole movie. When it was over with, we were like, 'We've gotten a lot better than that!'"

McKay teased that he will start writing the script soon, with the plan to start shooting in January or February and have the film be released anywhere between Christmas 2013 and May 2014. He revealed that Paramount finally greenlit the project because they had another film fall through and felt it was finally time for "Anchorman 2" to see the light of day. And there's never been a better time for it, McKay told Salon.

"It's crazy -- 'Anchorman' is a movie that certainly fit the time when it came out and every year it gets more and more relevant," he said. "We talk about all these anchormen on the air now and they're all kind of Ron Burgundy-esque guys. So yes, sadly, the character has gotten more and more relevant as the news has gotten to be nothing more than a ratings-driven profit machine that is never going to examine any of the real power in this country."

Though he wouldn't reveal much of the plot, McKay did promise more cameos in "Anchorman 2" in addition to the returning main cast. McKay went as far as to tease Salon with two plot points we can likely see in the upcoming flick.

"I don't want to give away too much, but I'll just give a couple pieces of ideas that we've kicked around," he said. "Keep in mind we're still writing the story, but I'll say one phrase for you: custody battle. I'll give you that. I'll give you one other one: bowling for dollars."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
