In Thomas Bartletts column 'The Buck Stops Here' at Salon.com, he suggests listeners diss the new singles by Cullum, Krall, and Morrissey, and D12, and instead suggests the following:

Modest Mouse's "Float on", which includes a catchy guitar riff, from their CD "Good News for People Who Love Bad News." It can be streamed for free from Better Propaganda.

"Habite Em Mim," Arto Lindsay, from "Salt"

His pick from the Brazilian pop artist is "sung half in Lindsay's oblique, poetic English, and half in languid Portuguese, is one of the record's best tracks."

"Old Fashioned Morphine," Jolie Holland, from "Escondida"

"Old Fashioned Morphine," recalls Billie Holiday, and features a horn-inspired jam session.

"Stormy Weather," Nina Nastasia,from "Dogs"

He suggests jazz songwriter Nina Nastasia's "Stormy Weather" from her 1999 debut "Dogs" -- and "This Is What It Is" from 2002's "The Blackened Air," and "Superstar" from 2003's "Run to Ruin." All feature outstanding drum work.

"Grave's Disease," Matt Pond PA, from "Emblems"

He disses Pitchfork, who "gave the record a scathing, 1.8 out of 10 review of "The Green Fury," and suggests listening to this "middle-of-the-road, wistful, orchestral indie pop" band.

"World's Away," Summer At Shatter Creek, from "Sink or Swim" EP

Craig Michael Gurwich is a "one-man-band extraordinaire" reminiscent of Tears for Fear, and four his mp3's are available for free on his Webpage. "Worlds Away" apparently features terrific piano work, too.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
