The Tiger Lillies

To say this eccentric three piece band is difficult to categorize is an understatement!

Fronted by a spooky, falsetto-singing accordionist, The Tiger Lillies' outrageous cabaret fuses the spirit of punk with the passion of the French chanson and the savagery of Dickensian underculture.

Their extreme brand of blasphemous ballads tell the tales of love, madness and unsavoury characters. Part street gutter opera and part wild gypsy song the frenetic cabaret has a raw, intense theatrical delivery underlined with a dark wit.

Martin Jacques, who founded the band, is a self-taught opera singer with a castrati style (not sure exactly what the difference is between this and falsetto - something technical I guess).

As the band's frontman his soaring and growling voice and wild accordion playing is kept in check by percussionist Adrian Huge who has the honour of being described by David Byrne as ?James Joyce on Drums?.

Double bassist, Adrian Stout, completes the line-up.

The band has a devoted cult following built up over a career spanning a dozen albums and numerous live shows. Fans include Simpsons creator, Matt Groening, Terry Gilliam and Robin Williams.

Their music has also been featured in films such as 'The Hunger' and 'Plunkett and Macleane' and they provided the memorable music for the multi-award winning, West End hit Shockheaded Peter.

Funny, weird, disturbing.

I happen to see a live a few months ago and it was absolutely BRILLIANT. They came to Greece for three shows and ended up playing more than 10 cause the tickets were selling like crazy. They have had a few more lives here and they'll keep coming so I'll catch another show for sure.

Read entire biography here and make sure you listen to some of their stuff. The new albums are better than the older ones.

you gotta listen to them. They have a track called "Bank Robber Blues" which is an axcellent blues track but they use an acordeon instead of a guitar. It reminded me of Diamanda Gallas

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
