'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Vamps Are 'Realistic' Villains, Says Star

Of all the outrageous, far-fetched and totally surprising ideas to come out of the Hollywood machine lately, the big screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's quirky bestseller "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" is the most unique.

Why? We'll let star Ben Walker explain it.

"He becomes the hero we know him to be," Walker told MTV News of the twist on his iconic character at WonderCon. "He's a great American hero, we know that, but now we get to see him as a great action hero."

And how might these vampires fit into the mythology of what we've come to know about the undead?

"It fits into the mythology of what we know about Lincoln frankly," he said. "Because we know his mother died mysteriously when he was younger and Seth was clever enough to say, 'Well, what if it was vampires?' and it builds from there and it works to the end."

Walker went on to say that while the film's blood thirsty creatures are full-on villains, we'll be able to sympathize with the fact that they're grounded in a realistic way - as much as can be so for fictional creatures.

"They're sympathetic in the sense that they are real, they're grounded. What would it mean to be immortal? For example, Rufus Sewell plays Adam who's been around since the [time of] the pyramids. What would that mean? How much knowledge would you have? How much pain would you have experienced? To me a more realistic vampire is much more frightening."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
