Nas Collaborates With The Late Heavy D On 'The Don'

He went from Nasty to Nas, from Nas to Escobar, but these days fans can simply call Nasir Jones the Don. On Thursday afternoon, the Queensbridge MC dropped “The Don,” the second single off of his upcoming tenth LP.

Produced by Salaam Remi, Da Internz and the late Heavy D, “The Don” mixes a1990’s reggae vibe with that vintage boom bap. The sound bed may be a sonic departure for the veteran MC, but the lyrics are vintage Nas. “Smokin’ an escobano, guzzle my second bottle/ Hope I don’t catch a hamo,” God’s Son spits on the song’s opening bars.

Lyrically there is no let up. Nas recalls his hustling days, toasts DJ Red Alert and memorializes the Overweight Lover when he rhymes, “Although he’s on to another chapter/ Heavy D gave this beat to Salaam for me to rap to.”

And thankfully he did. If “The Don” and last year’s “Nasty” are any indication of what Nas has in store for his next album, fans are in for a treat.
