What new bands have you heard this year that really rocked you?

I like this solo peformer out of Penn State named Dawn Kinnard (see thread). I once had the opportunity to manage Jewel for a split second before she became Jewel... and if I had to choose between them, my bet is on Dawn to soar.

I googled around to see what others thought the best new bands were, and a guy named Doug posted these on his website... So what are your choices?

Best New Bands of 2003

Evanescence - I first heard an Evanescence track a year or two ago, and it was of the best songs that I had heard in years. So when I heard them on the radio I freaked out. Goth/Metal/Industrial on main stream radio?! With an absolutely amazing chick singer?! And they're Christians?! I wouldn't have believed it was possible, but they are that good.

Celldweller - At the beginning of the year, I had a hard time imagining anything coming close to touching Evanescence, but Celldweller has not only come close, they're the camp. An amazing sound, blending electronica and heavy rock perfectly, they are also as tight live as on the album. This is one amazing project.

GlassBryd - Christine Glass you may remember for her two solo albums. You may not be familair with the name Marc Bryd though you may well know his work. After releasing three albums with his critically aclaimed alternative band Common Children, he went on to producing, working on the City on a Hill series (co-wrote God of Wonders) and recently finished the new Sonicflood cd. Anyway, these two bring all their talents to the table and have made a beautiful recording.

Hard to pinpoint dates exactly--what new bands, relatively speaking, do you like?

Are we talking about mainstream or well known bands? (I think we already established that no one has really heard of most of what I listen to) For the most part, the stuff I listen to is either old (stopped recording) or have been around for a few years already. As for 2003 off of the top of my head I cant think of any bands I like.

Gabriel Young may very well be the next big thing out! If you haven't heard of them check them out at www.gabrielyoung.com then vote on the pole in the "music suggestions" thread! Check them out ...it's so worth it!

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
