When it comes to the "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" trailer, I just wish the makers of the film would have been more honest upfront.

They tell us that they're going to make a follow-up to the "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," the Stephen Sommers-ification of the beloved action figures and TV show. They say Sommers is out and Dwayne Johnson is in. Plus, there will be Bruce Willis. That's all well and good, but nothing worth punching a wall in celebration.

But then the "Retaliation" trailer hits. Not once did anyone mention Cobra flags flying over the White House. Nobody cared to inform us that it looks like Channing Tatum will bite the dust in the first fifteen minutes. And I know for a fact that no one told us there would be a ninja fight on the side of a mountain, because if they had, we all would have been way more excited.

Nope, it turns out that "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" could actually be a really awesome movie, as we're now finding out with the trailer release. For the fans who fretted over the Sommers version, director Jon M. Chu has apparently fixed so much of what was wrong with the first movie. One of the widest and most ironic compliments paid to the trailer across movie blogs is that this actually looks like a "G.I. Joe" movie, the kind that played on Saturday mornings that aired PSAs afterward.

In a word, it looks totally badass.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
