Forget about the tricks, because yesterday hip-hop fans were blitzed with more treats than they could handle. For Halloween (October 31) several rappers—from veterans like Fat Joe, to newcomers like ASAP Rocky—dropped new mixtapes, giving fans more material than one iTunes library could ever need in a 24-hour span. And just in case you missed any of them, RapFix has you covered. Check out seven new tapes from Freddie Gibbs, Young Chris, Iron Solomon, Fat Joe, Jim Jones, L.E.P. Bogus Boys and ASAP Rocky and decide who put out the best project.

ASAP Rocky – LiveLoveA$Ap.

Harlem’s latest musical export, ASAP Rocky, has taken his buzz all the way to the majors by signing a new deal with Polo Grounds Music/RCA. The 23-year-old Rocky has shocked the masses by borrowing heavily from Houston’s soundscape. Down south slang finds its way into Rocky’s rhymes, along with the “chopped and screwed” vocal technique employed throughout. Features include TDE Entertainment’s Schoolboy Q, Spaceghost Purrp and several of his fellow ASAP crew members. - D.L. Chandler

Freddie Gibbs -Cold Day in Hell

Gangsta Gibbs is back on his bullsh-- with his latest Cold Day in Hell. Check the heartfelt “Barely M.A.D.E.,” where Freddie proclaims that “thuggin’ will be the death of him,” with just a hint of remorse. On “187 Proof” the Gary, Indiana spitter matches J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League’s kinetic drum roll with equally energetic bars. With “My Homeboy’s Girlfriend” Freddie puts his underrated storytelling ability on display and on “Two’s and Fews” he links with his CTE CEO Young Jeezy over jazzy horns and concussive drums. Over the course of 16 tracks Freddie Gibbs doesn’t disappoint. The subject matter may be hellish, but it sounds like hip-hop heaven. – Rob Markman

Young Chris - The Revival

Young Chris is no stranger to hard work. Despite his veteran experience, the former Roc-A-Fella rapper is currently working the game with the hunger of a newcomer. On The Revival The Youngest in Charge goes beyond standard mixtape fare, presenting 15 album quality tracks. On “ F--k the Other Side,” he hooks up with fellow State Property group member Peddi Crakk and on “Law Low” Chris and Meek Mill look to double up on the success of “House Party” with a new Philly street anthem. Beanie Sigel also appears on “Murder Outside,” but mostly the Young Gunner holds thing down all by his lonesome on bangers like “D.O.A.,” the autobiographical “Class is in Session” and the smooth two-stepper “So Fly.” – Rob Markman

Iron Solomon - Redrum Radio

Making the transition from battle MC to songwriter isn’t an easy one. Many have tried, few have broken through. Iron Solomon provides new hope for the battle-tested on his new tape Redrum Radio. On “Time Has Come,” Iron plants his flag, declaring his moment. “Follow Me” finds Solomon experimenting with a new sped up flow while on “One Shot” he gives fans a celebratory drinking anthem. Still, Iron isn’t looking to abandon his bread and butter; various radio freestyles and a SMACK/URL performance are sprinkled throughout. As it should be. – Rob Markman

Fat Joe – Darkside II.

The newly slim South Bronx rap veteran continues to be a relevant fixture in the game.
His latest mixtape, Darkside II, is a brief affair at just ten songs deep. Features include Jadakiss, Dre (of Cool & Dre fame) and Wu-Tang swordsman Raekwon. Technically, Cooked Coke Crack got the jump on his contemporaries with a late Sunday night (October 30) release. - D.L. Chandler

Jim Jones – Vampire Life (We Own The Night).

Dipset general Jim Jones has keep on a relentless mixtape and album grind since his 2004 debut. Continuing his tireless bent, the Capo dropped his fifteenth official mixtape Vampire Life (We Own The Night) yesterday with features from a few veterans and newcomers. Features from Sen City, 2 Chainz, Maino and MMG soldier Meek Mill pepper the collaboration-heavy tape from Jimmy. – D.L. Chandler

L.E.P. Bogus Boys (with DJ Green Lantern) – Now Or Neva.

Chicago duo, G. Count and Moonie, specialize in menacing street narratives and their latest release Now Or Neva, hosted by DJ Green Lantern continues that gritty tradition. The pair kept it light on the features with Meek Mill, fellow Windy City native Lupe Fiasco and Dion Primo as a few of the selective appearances. Bogus Boys also nabbed a few tracks from J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Hit-Boy and Frank Dukes as well. - D.L. Chandler

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
