THE KINKS

No the Kinks had a brief late'70's early 80's renaissance with Low Budget--I remember when they came around on that tour. Van Halen had just covered "You really Got Me" and the Kinks seemed to come tearing out to show everyone how it was really supposed to be played--the buzz at the time was they were the shit, the source, the go to guys, and they sold out the local civic center no problem. They also put out a live album from that tour I think, that got some airplay.

But definitely check out Low Budget if you've never heard it before. This 1979 classic, which was almost impossible to find just a couple of years ago has actually been digitally remastered--there's a good review here. :groovin:

I have a good bit of stuff (don't ask how much) that I have not played. It turns out that I have the album of which you spoke. I also have One For The Road which is a live 1980 release. It is probably also the live album that you mentioned. I need to give them a listen, especially since I have them.

They had that hit in the 80's..Come Dancing..but after that  :wha':   They had some great songs, Celluloid Hero's and Captain America...How many of their songs did Van Halen cover?  I think its 3

It pains me that The Kinks don't get the recognition for being around so long, many bands have come and gone but The Kinks, Stones, The Who and a few others keep on doing their thing. The Kinks made many great albums and will probably make more, Sleepwalker is one of the most underrated albums of all time. Long live The Kinks.

well said mate......choice band...one of the groundbreakers...the davies brothers were always an incredibly original and very clever songwriting and production team....

fav kinks album.... " low budget "...released in 1979....

fav kinks tracks.... title track " low budget ", and " attitude " also off the same album...what a rocker of a track!!

"Low Budget (Live)" - The Kinks

Cheap is small and not too steep

But best of all cheap is cheap

Circumstance has forced my hand

To be a cut price person in low budget land

Times are hard but we'll all survive

We just got to learn to economize

On a low budget

Low budget

We're on a low budget

Excuse my shoes they don't quite fit

You see, they're a special offer and they hurt me a bit

Even my trousers are giving me pain

Still, they were reduced in a sale so I shouldn't complain

They squeeze me so tight so I can't stand no more

They're size 28 but I take 34

On a low budget (What did you say?)

Low budget (Say it again)

Low budget

I'm shopping at Woolworth's and low discount stores

Dropping my standards and dropping my drawers

Quality costs, but quality wastes

So I'm giving up all of my expensive tastes

We're all on our uppers, all going skint

I used to smoke cigars, now I suck polo mints

On a low budget (What did you say?)

Low budget (Say it again)

Low budget (I thought you said that)

Art takes time, time is money

Money's scarce and that ain't funny

Millionaires, they're things of the past

We're in low budget film where nothing can last

Money is scarce, there's none to be found

So don't think I'm tight if I don't buy a round

I'm on a low budget

Low budget

Low budget (Hey, way down, way down)

I'm on a low budget

What did you say?

[Low budget]

I thought you said that

[Low budget]

I might look like a tramp, but don't write me off

I'll have you all know, I was once a tough

At least my hair is all mine, my teeth are my own

But everything else is on permanent loan

Once all my clothes were made by hand

Now I'm a cut price person, low budget land

Low budget

What'd you say?

Low budget

Say it again, say it again

Low budget

Yeah, yeah, yeah c'mon

Low budget

Low budget

Low budget

Yeah, yeah

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
