Randy Newman

though he still works today (think pixar soundtracks), i think his best stuff was in the 70's

his wit and sly political and social satire (and compositional skills) make for hilarious, well constructed, and thought provoking listening. his amazing piano work and dry, soulful voice complement each other rather nicely

a few good albums are:

Sail Away

Good Old Boys

12 Songs (self-titled Debut)

any closet Newman fans out there?

I've always liked Newman at his best, but like many witty artists, the misfires can be real flatliners. I'd advise anybody wanting to try Randy Newman for the first time to try the greatest hits first, then if you like that, ease into his other albums.

And to set the record straight....he doesn't really hate short people!

what about black people? Ive never been able to quite make up my mind as to what statement Newman was making in "Rednecks". other than that he's great. "Burn on" and "My Old Kentucky Home" are two that immediately come to mind that werent mentioned already.

Back in the 70s, I used to confuse him with Harry Nilsson. He does a lot of soundtracks and he wrote LA's theme song..

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
