Muhammad Ali: The Opera

Big News Network.com Wednesday 21st April, 2004

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali will appear on stage at the world premier of an opera based on his life and times, the Louisville Courier-Journal said.

The 20-minute opera, Muhammad Ali: Outside the Ring, is part of Kentucky Opera's Visions program for music students. The work is being performed for the first time Tuesday night at the Brown Theater.

The libretto begins with Ali carrying the Olympic torch at the opening ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta and flashes back to his youth in Louisville.

Ali is scheduled to appear on stage to thank performers, who include non-professional singers joined by the Concert Choir from the Louisville Youth Chorus.

Thirteen high school students created the piece and wrote the score; others designed and built the sets.

Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago is sponsoring a seminar on Ali and the civil rights movement May 7 at the Newberry Library.

The event will be presented by author Michael Ezra, who says Ali's draft resistance and professional boxing career advanced the African-American freedom struggle.

But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
