The Gentle Giant

I was thinking after reading a post here about the guys whose stuff I can really get into. With the death of Johnny Cash, Waylon, Merle, and endless more, there is only one artist left in country music that has never produced a song I didn't like.

Don Williams

He's got this smooth voice, super smooth, like he doesn't use it for talking, he's only ever sang. Heartfelt melodies are his forte, not, besides a few exceptions, clever word play.

You can sit back with a 26 of Jim Beam and really listen to this stuff until you end up on the floor arguing with your shoes. ;)

Here's a few great ones. (if you can't get these to work, right-click and save to disk)

I Believe in Love

Desperately

She Never Knew Me

Lord I Hope this Day is Good

eSpew is slow tonight, it might be easiest to look 'elsewhere' to hear a sample. However, if you haven't heard him, which I really can't picture, give it a shot.

Other good ones to check out:

You're my best friend

Amanda

I'm Just A Country Boy

I'll never be in love again

Rake And Ramblin' Man

Say it Again

Tulsa Time

It Must Be Love

If Hollywood Don't Need You (Honey I Still Do)

Come Early Morning

(Turn Out The Light And) Love Me Tonight

I Wouldn't Want To Live If You Didn't Love Me

We Should Be Together

The Ties That Bind

heh, yeah I have a little Lightfoot. His 'sundown' is one of the better songs to have ever came out of Canada.

His biggest hit in the states was "If you could read my mind." I think Jim Croce and Cat Stevens fall into this school...and maybe James Taylor at times...

Any of you guys fans of Ry Cooder or JJ Cale. They rock a bit more, but have country sensibiilites..

Don Williams was a major star at one point, but his career tailed off to the point where he's fallen off the screen, I think. Seems I recall reading a while back that personal problems derailed his career, but he's continued working through them.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
