Disney Hall Isn't Perfect

By Louise Roug

The Los Angeles Times

April 19, 2004

LOS ANGELES -- Can Disney Hall be all things for all genres of music? Apparently not. Keith Jarrett bad-mouthed the hall's acoustics after performing there for the first time last November.

But, says Los Angeles Philharmonic President Deborah Borda, Jarrett's complaint "had nothing to do with acoustics. It had to do with amplification."

An article in the Los Angeles Times addresses the problem of electronic enhancement in a hall that is exquisitely balanced for acoustic sound. The issue is particularly dicey for groups that bring their own sound crews, whose basic motto is "louder is better."

"I don't think Disney hall will ever be a perfect venue for amplified music," says LA Philharmonic Music Director Esa Pekka Salonen. But "with reasonably simple measures we can create a perfectly functional environment."

But I bet it kicks ass for the upcoming Final Fantasy concert next month. I'd go in a heartbeat.

Besides, the concert hall is much better than my bathroom...at least that's what the cellist told me.

Lol. In actuality, its one of the finest concert halls in the world. It's not a rock palace--it was designed for symphonies.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
