'Apollo 18' Exclusive Clip: What We Know So Far

There's a reason we've never gone back to the moon, and one unfortunate Russian cosmonaut seems to have discovered it in MTV News' exclusive clip from "[url="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/469121/moviemain.jhtml"]Apollo 18[/url]."

Based on the fact that the [url="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1658373/apollo-18-trailer-premieres-online.jhtml"]"Apollo 18" trailer[/url] involves finding a dead Russian cosmonaut, we're assuming things don't go so well for the guy in our clip. In fact, it seems pretty likely that the footage shown in that clip is from the camera in his helmet. It doesn't tell us more than we already know, but fortunately we've compiled a list of facts that we [i]do[/i] know about the "last" mission to the Moon to try to add some more context to the clip.

[b]Whose Footprints Are Those?[/b]
NASA and the Department of Defense sent two astronauts to the Moon on a secret mission in 1972. While they were there, they discovered footprints on the surface that weren’t from NASA-issued boots. The speculation was that they were from a Soviet cosmonaut.

[b]Something Wicked This Way Comes[/b]
During the trip, "something" got into one of the astronaut's suits. It is thought to have produced an infection of some kind, and may have led to one of the astronauts experiencing some kind of psychotic breakdown.

[b]One Big Cover-Up[/b]
A [url="http://apollo18movie.net/cosmonauts/index.php/i/img_0824"]top secret document[/url] revealed that the publicly canceled Apollo 18 mission, which was supposed to take place in July 1973, was switched from canceled to "postponed." There's no public record of this mission actually taking place, but speculation has implied that NASA did follow through with it.

[b]Keeping It Top Secret[/b]
Evidence has been released that points to NASA and the Department of Defense working together on [url="http://apollo18movie.net/cosmonauts/index.php/i/img_7769"]top secret missions[/url]. And there is proof that they were using [url="http://apollo18movie.net/cosmonauts/index.php/i/lunar_f_optic"]advanced top-secret camera technology[/url] on classified missions. The plot thickens!

[b]The Brookings Report[/b]
Could there be something on the Moon? The NASA commissioned study [url="http://apollo18movie.net/cosmonauts/index.php/i/215"]The Brookings Report[/url] seems to think so. It predicts the upcoming "...discovery of artifacts from alien life forms on the surfaces of the Moon, Mars or Venus."
