Eminem's 'King Of Hip-Hop' Title: Fans Respond

Recommended Posts

Eminem has been an iconic figure in the rap game since the Detroit bad boy with the blistering rhymes dropped his smash Shady/Aftermath debut album The Slim Shady LP back in 1999. In 2011, the Michigan wordsmith continues to sell plenty of albums, with 2010's Recovery still blazing the charts.

With two diamond-selling albums, sell-out festival spot dates and a side project with longtime friend Royce Da 5’9", Eminem and his fame have grown tall while many of his peers can only dream of his fame. Eminem now has another accomplishment to add to his towering résumé with his recent crowning as “King of Hip-Hop” by Rolling Stone magazine, which did a recent tally of rap powerhouse acts and their importance to the genre.

Although Rolling Stone is just one opinion, albeit a highly visible one, many fans are torn by the magazine’s nod to Eminem. On one side, fans acknowledge the impact and ability of Eminem, while the others state that sales too heavily influenced the crowning. Over on Twitter, the debate about Em's new title has been a heated one.

“S/O to @Eminem for the cover of @RollingStone & being crowned the King of Hip Hop...in my opinion its well deserved...,” tweeted a supportive @NastashNafrini, while user @LexLamont disputed, “No. Dope as he is, he doesn't have one largely undisputed classic album. I think Rolling Stone judged on sales and influence tho.” Fellow Hip-Hop King Jay-Z had his name come up a bit with fans as well. “In 2003, yes. Today, Jay has the crown,” tweeted Hov fan @kobe42085.

As fans draw lines in the sand over who they feel deserves the top nod, Nicki Minaj fans are happy as the Young Money diva was the only female to be included on the Kings list. “It just dawned on me. Slim Shady & Roman (Eminem & Nicki Minaj) are the 'King & Queen of Hip-Hop.' Dubbed by ROLLING STONE!!!!” tweeted a stoked @turkBISH in support.

Eminem should be used to this manner of high praise by now, as MTV last year dubbed the Detroit star the Hottest MC in the Game, edging out Jay-Z and Kanye West, who came in at #2 and #3 respectively. Will Eminem have a repeat showing in 2011? Stay tuned.

Did Eminem deserve the King of Hip-Hop crown? If not, who do you think should have gotten the nod? Tweet to us @MTVRapFix or leave us a comment below.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
