Entertainment Weekly chatted with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the writing team behind "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," and talk inevitably turned to a potential sequel, or sequels. Jaffa and Silver likened their "Planet of the Apes" film to a Moses story, so EW asked if the next flick would be a Joseph story, replete with epic wars and world conquering.

"I’m touching wood, because I’m superstitious!" Silver said. "We definitely have ideas for where the sequel — plural, where the sequels — would take us."

Jaffa said that ideas for sequels were built into the narrative, as anyone who's seen the movie understands. There's the Icarus space mission, the virus set loose on the world by the end of the flick, and of course the ape uprising. He said that there hasn't been an "official discussion" about a sequel yet, but there are definitely ideas for where the story would go.

Silver seconded that, elaborating, "When we started this, we knew that this movie would stand on its own, and we designed it that way. But if it didn’t stand on its own, we pictured a trilogy that would start with this movie."

So what would the title of the next movie be? They haven't decided yet, though they would like a "Success of the Planet of the Apes" down the road.

"It’s that B-movie flair, that excitement," Silver said. "We haven’t found the cheesy-but-fun noun that would fit the action that we’re seeing."

"Maybe 'Revenge,' " Jaffa said.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
