Young Money starlet Nicki Minaj continues to have a banner year with movie roles, sellout tours and a hit album in Pink Friday. Yesterday (August 10), Billboard announced that Minaj has the biggest selling solo single from a female rapper in almost a decade. The single “Super Bass” has made quite the leap on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts, making it the highest charting solo hit for a female rapper since Missy Elliot and her “Work It” single which hit the No. 2 slot in 2002.

Nicki Minaj’s debut album Pink Friday has helped to keep the Cash Money brand name prominent along with Young Money boss Lil Wayne and fellow label mate Drake. Cash Money co-founder and fellow CEO Ronald “Slim” Williams appears to be satisfied with Nicki’s success and gave the rap star some well-deserved praise.

“Nicki isn't like any other female rapper,” says "Slim" Williams, “We knew she had the goods when Lil Wayne signed her. She's not a female rapper -- she's a pop star who happens to rap.” Slim’s claim certainly holds weights when considering the company Niciki Minaj is in now. Lauryn Hill, Da Brat, M.I.A., Lil Mama all have hit the top 10 with Hill’s “Doo Wop” the crowning champ of them all as the highest selling rap single from a female of all time.

Pink Friday continues to move units as Nielsen Soundscan reports that Nicki’s album passed the 1.5 million mark last week. The album didn’t rush out the gate but with “Super Bass” showing incredible staying power and her upcoming movie project, Nicki Minaj and her momentum is apparently picking up speed.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
