CyberSing 2004

The Lotte Lehmann Foundation announces its second CyberSing, a web-based art song contest which originated in 2002. Designed to make competing more accessible, CyberSing takes place between July and December 2004, with most aspects of the competition available online. CyberSing participants submit their recordings, via post, by 31 July 2004, to the Lehmann Foundation. Required repertoire includes German and French songs, songs of the artist's choice and one required piece, commissioned especially for CyberSing and written by the distinguished American composer Libby Larsen: I love you through the daytimes is available via download for US$5 on the CyberSing page of the Lehmann Foundation website.

Recordings of the semi-finalists, selected by judges appointed by the Lehmann Foundation, will be blind-posted on the Foundation's website in October 2004. Visitors to the site may then vote for their favourite performers. There will be a special cash prize for the singer receiving the most online votes.

The competition is arranged into Division I, with a top prize of US$1,000, for singers aged twenty three and younger, and Division II, with a top award of US$5,000, for singers above the age of twenty three.

Singers of all nationalities from any part of the world may enter. Cash awards will also be given in each division ($250 in Division I and $500 in Division II) for Best French Song Performance, Best Lieder Performance, Best American Song Performance, Best Pianist and Audience Favourite.

Contestants from Zimbabwe to New Zealand took part in CyberSing 2002 and the winners may still be heard online, giving the additional benefit of long term exposure.

The legacy of German soprano Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976), one of the greatest singers of the last century, lives on through her distinguished recordings of art song and opera. Lehmann, a unique and passionate advocate of German Lieder, spent much of the last twenty-five years of her life teaching classes in opera and art song interpretation at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, USA. She described interpreting art song as 'breathing life into this work of art, welding word and tone with equal feeling into one whole, so that the poet sings and the composer becomes poet and two arts are born anew as one.' The Lehmann Foundation, via CyberSing and its other activities and programmes, seeks to advance this tradition by way of the internet and other state-of-the-art technologies.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
