Koch Records, home to rapper Soulja Slim, have released a statement to press in response to Slim's death last week following a shooting. The statement, from Koch and it’s subsidiary Cut Throad Comitty, reads as follows:

'While most of us prepared to reconnect with family and friends to give thanks on the afternoon of November 26th, James Tapp, aka New Orleans Hip Hop legend Soulja Slim was tragically gunned down in New Orleans exiting his motor vehicle in front of his mother's house.

At this time, authorities have no suspects or motives for the shooting.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless loss and we hope that whoever did this is brought to justice. He was a friend and he will be missed," said Bob Frank, President of KOCH Entertainment.

Soulja Slim will always be remembered as an important figure in the Southern rap scene. Anthony Murray co-CEO of Cut Throat Committy Records and Slim's personal manager comments, "Soulja made it his business to take kids out of the ghetto and give them jobs with his label as a way of doing good for society. He really had the best of intentions at heart so these kids wouldn't have to endure some of the hardships he had to growing up."

Originally known as Magnolia Slim, he started spitting rhymes back in 1992. Raised in New Orleans in the notoriously tough Magnolia Projects, Slim released two albums independently -- Dark Side and Soulja For Life. In the mid 90's, Slim signed to Master P's mighty No Limit label, going Gold with the album Give It 2 'Em Raw even though the rapper was incarcerated. He returned in 2001 with the well-received The Streetz Made Me, which generated the hit single "Soulja Like Mentality". In 2003, via his own label imprint (Cut Throat Committy Records), Slim signed with KOCH Records releasing the album Years Later ... A Few Months After. Thanks to the hit "I'll Pay For It" (a #1 record on WQUE/New Orleans for 8 weeks), Slim re-established himself as one of the South's true heavy hitters. "Hot Jock" Wild Wayne from WQUE comments, "He was extremely influential, some people call him the 2Pac of the South. He was about to shine a new light on New Orleans in terms of his music. It's just a tragic loss."

"Rap is a cutthroat committee," Soulja lamented a few months ago. "But with KOCH Records, the #1 Independent label in the country, we've hooked up to make things official. Now we are going all the way." Ironically, Soulja Slim had just finished filming a video for his brand new single from Years Later ... titled "Lov Me Lov Me Not." The track is shipping to radio as we speak.

KOCH Records and Cut Throat Comitty wishes to extend its deepest condolences to Soulja Slim's family'.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
