playing bass

Hi,

I would now like to start learning how to play the bass.But before making a concrete decision and going out and buying a bass guitar,I would like to know: is playing bass and guitar at the same time detrimental to each other? I mean, would my technical skills at guitar suffer directly due to playing the bass or vice versa?

Playing the bass is similar to playing guitar - but it has a rhythm component that is aligned with the drums in setting the pace of the song. i don't see how obtaining a skill at one of the instruments, would be a detriment to the other - having a skill at both would just make you a more accomplished musician.
