P2P Scam Sites

A growing problem in the P2P/File Sharing community is what can be known as the "scam site". Often times these web sites are all decorated with promises of "unlimited downloads of all your favorite games, music, software, movies, etc...” Of course, they then ask for a "membership fee", which is where the "scam" part comes into play.

These sites...

*A lot of the time are providing copies of already free or otherwise P2P/File Sharing software.

*Have no licensing of the content.

*Sometimes even go so far as to promise anonymity, or that downloading or uploading copyrighted content on their "service" or whatever network they use is perfectly legal in all instances.

Sharing or downloading copyrighted material without the authorization of the copyright holder is illegal in many countries including the United States. Only a select few "services" such as Apple's iTunes, Real Networks' Rhapsody, and a few others, actually have a deal with the creators, copyright holders or the trade organizations that represent them (e.g. RIAA, MPAA, etc...).

These are the most common types of scam sites, but it's not limited to just that. Lots of sites simply link to these sites or redirect there. Lots of sites link to adware, spyware, or annoying dialer programs.

Bottom line, I felt like compiling a list. Feel free to make suggestions (such as sites you know of or if you think a site doesn't deserve to be on the list).

Now I’ve split this up into two categories. If a BeatKing mod or admin wants to add more categories, or make changes, by all means do so though do let me know about.

The first category is a list of imitation sites that are “plays” or misspellings on common P2P URLs, or they use former P2P URLs (like old Kazaa Lite URLs) to front their scam. The second category is for everything else.

The list is posted using the "code" BB tag so the URLs do not parse (we wouldn't want active links to these sites now would we?). I remember other boards having a checkbox option to stop this from happening but, oh well, this will do.

used to be one of the very best valid Kazaa Lite download site.

must have literally thousands of 'redirector' pages (i.e. Pages that soon redirect themselves to club.mp3search.ru when you enter them or click on a link).

The club is another allofmp3 type of site. They charge you a few cents per song. The drawback is that you must purchase music (though credit cards or Paypal) in chunks of a minimum of 1 to 20 gigabytes at a time (for $10+).

I'm still not ready to pay for mp3s (and probably never will be). Since there really is no legality in US citizens paying a Russian mp3 site, then sites like this have no real advantage over free P2P and web sites.

They are actually at a major disadvantage because people are very nervous with using their credit cards online and especially through a "shady" Russian site. It also costs money which is more than a lot of people are willing to put forth for digital music (myself included).

You don't have to necessarily remove it.

It may be a pay site, but there's no telling if it still isn't a scam or not.

I've never read any reviews on it or heard of anyone using it, so for all we know the site could take your money and not give you anything.

Does anyone know if this has anything to do with soulseek, or whether it might be a scam site?

I seem to vaguely remember Yoda saying something about a former soulseek URL linking to a mainpeen dialer.

I'm not sure though.

When soulseek had problems, some asshole people came along and took the domain. The site you posted isn't affiliated with the Soulseek you want.

Which site are you talking about? I removed the one in question ( http://club.mp3search.ru.) before you posted (It's in my post).

And thanks for the confirmation on the soulseek domain. I knew what the real soulseek domain was, but I just wasn't 100% certain of what the other domain was.

I have been using Soulseek for over 2 years now and also

have a room there called the ROCKON CAFE !!, alot of old AG users are there

and we love the site its more based on communties and rooms and most share

by list only there ...alot of music on soulseek and some great people and in

my personally opion the best damn p2p site out there for music and friends

I couldn't believe the freakin runaround I had to go through to find a clean, free copy of K-lite out there when I switched from the old clunker emachine to this little vaio last month. I use KZ but rarely nowadays (it's good for finding music that one hears in the background of a TV commercial, lol), but I must have gone to at least 20 of those sites you listed off Ken, before I found it at http://www.downloads.techtv.com/binaries/2003/klite.zip

As for the RIAA, they're not going to limit themselves to the fasttrack network, and nor do their stubborn, greedy asses want to be pegged as only being interested in fasttrack.

I know BayTSP monitors Soulseek because I've had connections blocked by them by Peerguardian while I was sharing content on Soulseek.
