Newspaper reports pop star wasn’t breathing when ambulance arrived

The Los Angeles Times reports that Michael Jackson has died at age 50 after being rushed to UCLA Medical Center.

Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Steve Ruda told the newspaper that Jackson was not breathing when paramedics arrived at his home and CPR was performed.

TMZ.com reported that he may have suffered cardiac arrest.

Michael Jackson, the moonwalking former child star who became known the world over as the "King of Pop" before his life and career deteriorated in a freakish series of scandals, has died, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. He was 50.

The circumstances of his death were not immediately clear....

The LA Times reported that Captain Steve Ruda said Jackson was not breathing when Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call at his Los Angeles home.

11.21am: News agency AFP quotes Jackson's close friend Uri Geller, the television psychic, as saying he was ''devastated''. He admits he still hopes it is not true.

11.16am: Quincy Jones says he's devastated. Michael was "the consummate entertainer" - CNN.

11.14am: CNN reports the Jackson wasn't breathing when firefighters arrived at his home this morning.

11.10am: Massive crowds build up outside the UCLA Medical Center where Jackson was taken.

10.50am: Sky News reports a statement from Jackson's friend, the reverend Al Sharpton. A friend of 35 years, the reverend asked the world to be respectful of Jackson in the days following his death.

10.20am: International media - including the LA Times - report the death.

10.15am: Leading entertainment news site TMZ reports Jackson is dead.

9.30am: Early US media reports say Michael Jackson has suffered a heart attack in his home.

Michael was still in his prime when he recorded this song. He was the best dancer in the world in his prime.
