Should I sell all my CDs?

Recommended Posts

I give up, and I give in. This format war sucks. MP3s are killing music. The quality is terrible. They sound awful, no matter what size the files are, and what you're playing them on. They. Just. Plain. Suck.

Me thinkie he be full-o-shit.

You can't get killer sound out of a pair of earbuds but portablility of a nice surround sound system with 12" or bigger speakers is not possible either. A lot of the poor sounding mp3 rips are due to poor ripping, not the format itself. Yes, 128 is not very good but 320 sounds great. Most people can't hear the difference between 320 and lossless. Even if they can hear the difference, they will have to have good equipment to tell them apart.

I have downloaded some lossless rips that sound much worse than an mp3 I have of the same album. When you rip an album with all the settings on max speed and have the computer doing several other things at the same time, you frequently get shitty rips. Another problem is people set the gain sky high and that causes distortion and clipping.

I rip cds at a low speed read setting, max quality, and never multitask while ripping. I also prefer lossless but truthfully, I can't tell the difference between cd and 320cbr mp3 on the system I have in the war room (assuming it is a quality mp3 rip).

..but there is something to be said for vinyl.

besides the snap, crackle, pop....&.....skip......

Flac! gotta love it!

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
