Happy Record Store Day!

Recommended Posts

Yes, it's that time again. Every year local mom and pop record stores hold a special celebration, often with bands and special offerings. Pitchfork sums of today's activities succinctly:

"This Saturday, April 18, is Record Store Day, and hundreds of independent record stores around the country and across the globe will be hosting in-store performances, handing out freebies, holding sales, and selling dozens of RSD-exclusive releases pressed in tiny enough editions that they might not last through the day. There are dozens of them, mostly on vinyl; many of them are just analog versions of material that's already or imminently on CD, but the best-sounding ones offer otherwise unavailable material. Matador, in particular, has risen to the challenge with a Pavement live LP and Sonic Youth split singles with Beck and Jay Reatard. (Sadly, word is that new Modest Mouse and Elvis Costello singles promised for this year's Record Store Day, as well as a reissue of New Order's "Temptation"/"Hurt" 7", won't be ready in time.) Here's a quick guide to all the RSD exclusives we were able to hear by press time."

I worked at a record store during college, so i have a special sentiment towards the many knowledgeable music lovers who work for them. I will be dropping by Amoeba in LA sometime today and encourage you to visit the record store near you. It's fun!

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
