The Starting Point... Lou Reed - Mistrial

Sometimes it’s the first album you hear by an artist – it has you hooked. It might not be that artist’s best album, you might not even know that at the time (and, brilliantly, you won’t care) but it will become the one you know best, refer back to, remember fondly. It’s your starting point…

My starting point with Lou Reed is Mistrial – possibly a strange one. A lot of people will have hunted down Transformer or even Berlin. Many probably started with New York – or hooked into the Velvet Underground material first. Not me, I started with Mistrial.

i`m with you mate....i think that rock`n`roll animal was his peak...not to mention some very good backing muso`s on that one....

The musicians were Pentti Glan (drums) and Prakash John (bass) of the contemporary Alice Cooper band, Ray Colcord (keyboards), and Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter on guitars. The album was recorded live on December 21, 1973 (1973-12-21), at Howard Stein's Academy of Music in New York.

Further excerpts from the same concert were released in 1975 as Lou Reed Live. This live album's stereo mix differs from its counterpart in that guitarist Dick Wagner is heard on the left channel, and Steve Hunter is on the right; this arrangement is reversed on "Rock 'n' Roll Animal."

"Coney Island Baby" (1975) would be another favourite of mine...The album features the song "She's My Best Friend", which was originally recorded by Reed's band The Velvet Underground in 1969.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
