Windows 7 RC might be out May 5th for public d/load...

According to Microsoft’s Partner Program website, we’ll see Windows 7 RC drop on May 5th for the public. There were reports that MSDN subscribers were able to download the new Windows 7 version, but it turns out to have been a slip up on Microsoft’s part by posting a page early.

Windows 7 - Microsoft's antidote to Vista...

Julie Larson-Green hopes you'll like Windows 7. If not, well, now you and a billion other people know who to blame.

Microsoft is counting on Larson-Green, its head of "Windows Experience," to deliver an operating system that delights the world's PC users as much as its last effort, Vista, disappointed them.

Windows 7 includes virtual version of XP, remote media streaming....

Microsoft released a near-final version of the Windows 7 operating system to a large group of technology-savvy testers that adds a few new features, including a way to run Windows XP applications.

The Windows 7 "release candidate" will be available for anyone to download and try out on May 5, but is available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers from today.

The release candidate, which follows an earlier public beta release which saw Microsoft servers getting customer feedback every 15 seconds, will be available for download for one month.

Windows 7: It's Vista done right....

One of the handiest features in any piece of Windows software is the "undo" button, which lets you step back in time to delete some typing, reverse a misguided photo edit or change some other ill-advised action.

With the latest version of its Windows operating system, Microsoft reaches for a real-life undo button to correct the many mistakes of Windows Vista.

Windows 7 Compatibility set to soothe the Vista ache...

You'd never buy a car without taking it for a test drive. Now the same applies to computers - or at least to the Windows operating system, which drives 90 per cent of all PCs.

What to expect in Windows 7 RC...

The best thing to happen to Microsoft's public relations in years, Windows 7 is more than just spin. The latest official update to what some are calling the largest shareware trial period ever introduces more than mere bug fixes as the operating system upgrades from beta to release candidate. The Windows 7 Release Candidate does contain several major and minor changes, but the overall experience remains largely unchanged.

Seven-up for Microsoft....

WHY is the new operating system from Microsoft called Windows 7?

Well, it's a funny story. In the early days there was Windows 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. Then things got complicated as Windows branched into Desktop and Server editions. The next version was only considered 3.1 and there was also Windows 3.1 NT for servers. Then version 4.0 was called Windows 95 and NT 4.0, yet Windows 98 was only considered 4.1. Windows 2000 and Server 2000 were considered worthy of jumping to 5.0, but strangely Windows XP and Server 2003 only ranked as 5.1. Vista became 6.0 and it's replacement is 6.1. So Windows7 is actually Windows6.1. Clear? If you count all these, this new version should be called Windows 10, but the name OS 10 was already taken.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
