More life in Biggie case

(Tuesday March 23, 2004 06:27 PM)

Theories surrounding the murder of Notorious B.I.G. have been stirred up once more as the FBI is allegedly investigating corruption in the LAPD.

Last year Los Angeles Times writer Chuck Philips, who has been criticised by figures including British documentary film-maker Nick Broomfield, wrote a piece alleging that Notorious B.I.G. was behind the shooting of fellow rap legend Tupac Shakur.

He is now claiming that the FBI is investigating Amir Muhammad, thought by some to be the man that pulled the trigger on Notorious B.I.G.

This latest development supports a theory that runs contrary to Chuck Philips' original - and controversial - article and supports the argument that it was formidable Death Row Records boss Marion 'Suge' Knight that ordered the shooting of both Tupac and Biggie.

The theory that has Amir Muhammad as the assassin was first propagated by ex-LAPD officer Russell Poole who featured in Nick Broomfield's documentary, Biggie And Tupac, and whose version of events is the primary source for Sylvester Stallone's forthcoming feature film about the killings.

Poole contends that Suge Knight was behind both killings and had Tupac murdered because he was planning to leave Death Row and Biggie shot in order to make both killings appear to be a part of the then-escalating East-West Coast rap feud.

Chuck Philips' latest article in the Los Angeles Times quotes LAPD Deputy Chief Michael Berkow as saying: "This is a joint FBI-LAPD investigation, and the LAPD is cooperating 100 percent."

The FBI reportedly began its current investigation when an officer watched a VH1 special on the death of Notorious B.I.G.

I met with Suge Knight about doing a movie on Biggie and Tupak and I had a brief conversation with the officer above. After doing some research, I concluded that the killings are more a direct result of gang rivalry and I do not believe Suge Knight was involved in setting up the murder of either.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
