1st off, thank you very much for the patchouli link, Umma. :)

back on topic: we'd filled out online forms to book appointments to look for a flat and had only one requirement: a tub (i hate showers) & the letting agents all said that was a luxury. imagine our surprise when shown the first place which, of course, had a bathtub. when we asked about it, the agent said a tub was a jacuzzi, what we call a 'hot tub' in the states.

lol ... your estate agent needs to improve his bi-lingual skills. Chances are he knew what you meant and just wanted to be awkward. The English can be pretty stuffy at times... not like the Irish at all :D

Umma, this was /every/ agent (over 250 we pinged online before we went) who told us the same thing. and that's another thing: the term 'estate agent' conjures up visions of very wealthy people buying huge fancy places w/lots of land (so does 'estate wagon' which we call a plain ol' 'station wagon' back home).

oooh, you're in Ireland? i have friends there and i'm dying to visit them.

that's another thing i love about being here, the ease w/which everyone can travel to different places. yeah, i know it's a much smaller scale than in the states but since it is, people are accustomed to seeing other kinds of people and so are more forgiving and open-minded to those who might not fit their own types. (until we actually met in meatspace, my BF assumed i was a 'soccer mom' (general stereotype: amerikan housewife w/school-age kids who drives them in an SUV). that couldn't be further from the truth.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
