Usher's 'Confessions' Has People Guessing

NEW YORK - Although his latest album is titled "Confessions" and features songs about a painful breakup and infidelity, Usher swears that it's not a reflection on his recent split with TLC member Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas.

"This album is not specifically about us," Usher told The Associated Press in a recent phone interview. "It isn't an autobiography about my life. (Although) I did pull from some of my personal experiences from my life."

In a bitter radio interview, Chilli accused Usher of being unfaithful. Now the seemingly personal tone of Usher's disc has tongues wagging — especially the song "Confessions," about a man who gets another woman pregnant.

"Although this album I was able to be a lot more honest, it's still creative. I am a creative artist is able to pull from a lot of people around me," said Usher, 25. "That's a story that I have not went through firsthand but have experienced. We all have had issues with infidelity."

"Confessions," Usher's fourth album, is due out Tuesday. The album already has spawned the No. 1 hit single, "Yeah!"

"I'm ecstatic," Usher said. "It's having the same reaction in Europe — Germany, Japan, everywhere."

Usher is celebrating his album release with a live, exclusive concert for AOL for Broadband at New York City's Webster Hall on Tuesday — "my first performance in two years."

While his 2001 album, "8701," sold more than three million copies, the R&B singer is hoping his new album reaches an even wider audience.

"Pop is whatever is popular, not just pop," Usher said.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
