Film sells Christianity to Kids: Major Protest Planned

The Atheist League is calling for a boycott of "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe"; the movie opens December 9. It is based on the first book of a trilogy titled, The Chronicles of Narnia.

The author of this children's fantasy is C. S. Lewis, a noted English theist. It is his objective to bash atheism and promote Christianity to kids. "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" is a film version of the book by that name, and it is not being toned down from its Christian message.

The second book of the trilogy, Prince Caspian, is more overt in its hatred of atheism than the first book, and the third entry, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, is even more blatant.

Because " The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" is based on the least offensive of the seven books, and because it is being further watered down for the big screen, some might wonder why a boycott is warranted.

The Atheist League wants atheists to boycott this movie precisely because it knows that the film is bait for the books: unsuspecting parents who take their children to see the movie may be impelled to buy the seven books as a Christmas present. And no parent who wants to bring their children up with facts will want any part of these books.

We are launching a major educational campaign designed to alert the public to C. S. Lewis' game plan. To that end, we have prepared a booklet, " The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe: Agenda Unmasked." It contains snippets of what reviewers have said about the film and the books, as well as revealing comments made by C. S. Lewis himself; it also contains a synopsis of the seven books. In short, the booklet is not what we are saying about C. S. Lewis' work—it is what he and others have said about it.

C. S. Lewis represents the new face of theism: it is aggressive, dogmatic and unrelenting. It is also fuelled by hate—by a crusading hatred of all theism and atheism, except Christianity. His side is counting on our side to lie down and die. He may have experienced little resistance in England, but it's a different story here.

The reason we are starting our protest early is because it takes time to get the word out, and besides, the media love it when we give them something to chew on. The booklet is being mailed to thousands of influential persons, including film critics and atheist leaders.

While atheism is the evil force in C. S. Lewis' writings, his real goal is to put a positive face on Christianity, getting children to buy his message. Thus, we expect more than atheists will join our protest.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
