Cave In Nearly Finished With New Album

Modern rock act Cave In is "80% finished" with its next RCA studio album, guitarist Adam McGrath told Billboard.com following the group's performance last night (March 17) at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. The quartet unveiled several new songs during its late-night set at Emo's Jr., including an incredibly heavy opening instrumental, "Spiderwarp," and "The World Is in Your Way."

The set was packed with the kind of punishing metal that highlights Cave In's early albums, including a closing rendition of "Halo of Flies" from 1999's "Until Your Heart Stops" and "Big Riff" from the 2000 follow-up, "Jupiter." In fact, the group did not play any tunes from its streamlined 2003 RCA debut, "Antenna," but McGrath says nothing should be read into the band's apparent embrace of its heavier roots.

"I don't want to say we're a heavy band again," he says. "People like Cave In for all the different things we've done. I like diversity. The best rock shows offer you lots of different things." The group also played the new cuts "Moshtrocity" and "Trepanning," the latter of which is included on a new sampler from Hydra Head Records, which issued Cave In's first three albums.

McGrath says he'd like to see the as-yet-untitled new set released by the fall to mark a relatively quick turnaround from "Antenna," which debuted at No. 6 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. The group has been working with producer Andrew Schneider, with whom it previously collaborated on the 2002 "Tides of Tomorrow" EP.
