I need to take a computer on a long trip. About 200 miles. In a car. It will continue to be used in it's current capacity at it's destination. Does anybody have any ideas as to the safest way to do this. The original packaging for this comp was thrown away a long time ago, so that's not an option. One of of the things I am concerned about is knocking the hard drive all out of whack. It's a fairly smooth riding car, and about 3/4 of the trip is interstate highway.

Thanks for your ideas!

:Here's to you:

Anytime I've moved.... I've just set the box flat on the back seat...

never had any trouble. I think it should be fine anywhere in the car as long as you give it a little padding :)

You used to be able to park your hard drive in DOS, but I forget how it's been so long.

What would be the advantage of this? It's only about a 4 hour drive. And the comp is going to be set-up on arrival. So it's only going to be out of service for about 5 hours.

Come enjoy a whole new experience and have a lot of fun, too. The 13th Annual Road Kill Cook-off. Anything goes, as long as, the main ingredient is an animal commonly found along the road. You can taste some very unique dishes. The cooking begins at noon; the judging begins at 3; and the tasting beings when you work up the nerve! Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams chosen by our panel of "celebrity judges." A People's Choice Award will go to the entry voted tops by the crowd. To find out more, send an e-mail to [email protected].

It's the 13th item on this list.

You shouldn't have to do anything special just lay it on the seat. I used to leave my puter on my back seat for weeks back in the old Lan Party days and never had a problem. It had 2 hard drives in it and they never broke lose.

ahem..... you were the one worrying about your hard drive getting messed up :P

Park just parked the heads to stop anything moving while in transit.

You may wish to consider securing it with a center lap belt if your vehicle has one. You never know when you will need to slam on the brakes. No matter where it is, it should be secured. This will prevent it from excessive movement and prevent it from becoming a projectile and causing damage to you, your family or your vehicle. You may also wish to prevent direct sunlight hitting it. Without it's cooling operating, I wouldn't trust what the sun may do. Just some thoughts.

put it on the passenger seat and seatbelt it in...

then treat it how you'd treat the female if she was sat there, by stroking it every few miles...

erm.. unless the lady is actually gonna be sat there... then er..

... put it on her lap :) and then you can stroke them both

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
