The Hits, Misses, and Head-Scratchers of This Year’s Coachella Line-up

Having impressed hardcore music fans with previous reunion coups such as the Pixies, Jane’s Addiction, and the Stooges, there was a whiff of disappointment about the just-revealed line-up for this year’s Coachella Festival. It’s impressive to see freshly reunited ’90s alternative radio hit-makers like the Verve, Portishead, and the Breeders on the bill, but their presence seems a little underwhelming when measured against last year’s comeback kids—Rage Against the Machine and the Jesus & Mary Chain, who trotted out insufferably hot guest vocalist Scarlett Johansson.

As great as it’s going to be to watch ...............................

Anyone going? I hope to go up for at least one day :dancer7:Stererogum notes how to snare free tickets!

"It's all about the green this year, as always. Here's your incentive to share rides: If you carpool with four or more, you can win tickets to Coachella for life. That might get depressing when you're 82, but whatevs. Other good things to know include Amrtrak service to and from the grounds on the Coachella Express, and on-site tent hotels. Nearby hotels are way sold out (we tried, to no avail), so if none of those options are happening for you, look into getting a house. That's what we're doing this year. We'll have to bring our own bathing towels, but if that's the trade off for a pool and afterparty potential ... we'll take it."

Coachella Starts Today!

More than 150,000 fans are expected to converge on Friday for the ninth annual Coachella festival where more than 125 bands will gather for three days of desert performances.

"There is a magical feel that you get out there," said festival founder Paul Tollett. "It's different than most festivals -- I'm not saying better, but different. There seems to be a lot of life to the show, a lot of personality."

Wired was on hand opening night of the Coachella Festival:

"Throngs of music lovers gathered Friday at the Coachella music festival, braving temperatures in the mid-90s to see their favorite musicians. With five stages and more than 30 bands playing each day, it's nearly impossible to see every act. Even seeing your favorite artists is difficult considering the main stage is roughly a half-mile from the largest performance tent."

Here are photos they captured from Aphex Twin, Aesop Rock, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Vampire Weekend and Jack White - (See More At Wired)

The LA Weekend is on hand for full coverage of the festival:

"The National were off to a strong start, but something wasn't right. The weather was just shy of idyllic; the band - expanded to seven with the addition of horns - was almost synced; the crowd was flirting with movement."

"But singer Matt Berninger - dressed in black, looking in profile like a handsomer, whisky-soaked and wiry Philip Seymour Hoffman - seemed stricken by the audience's size. He'd grab his head like Thom Yorke, pained, reaching deep for those guttural man-pipes but coming back with a handful of nearly there. Then it happened. The sun hit the horizon and cast the crowd in orange, the white stage lights flared gilding the band in platinum, and Berninger swallowed whatever was in the cooling air, screaming to the scaffolding: "We're half-awake in fake empire!" He shredded his throat with abandon and, just like that, the baritone was there. Drums, guitar, bass, and voice hit an epic stride. The horns blazed. On the grass, ponytails flailed and feet moved. A guy in a sailor hat mouthed the wrong words. He'd probably never heard the song before."

Jeff Weiss at The Passion of Weiss, summarizes the festival in this humorous three part article. So if you didn't go, at least you can partake in the wit of POW:

Coachella - Day 1: Walk the Line

Coachella Day 2 - The Accidental Tourist or Can we Please All Agree To Stop Using the Phrase "Coachella-Ella-Ella-Ella"

Coachella Day 3 - Never Underestimate How Long It Takes To Blow Up an Inflatable Pig

Don’t get me wrong. I’m about as big of a Pink Floyd fan as there is, but like anyone who has ever been to college and had a marijuana habit, I have heard Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall enough for eight lifetimes, the two albums that 30-plus years after their creation, Waters is still milking for all they’re worth, with or without David Gilmour. Which makes sense from a purely economic standpoint. No one in their right mind would go see Waters doing the entirely of The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. But you’d think that the guy could dig a little deeper into his back catalog. Atomheartmother, Meddle, and Obscured by Clouds, all are unsung gems in the Floyd canon, but Waters sticks to the bread and butter: Dark Side, The Wall, Wish You Were Here. Which could be fine were he to do more than merely re-create the albums note for note. You might as well be at the laserium.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
