Cloverfield Crushes The Box Office

Wired reports that "J.J. Abrams' creature feature Cloverfield raked in an estimated $16.7 million in its first day of release, according to Box Office Mojo. The big opening lands the film near the top of the list for one-day January box-office hauls, and puts the jitter-cam flick, which reportedly cost only $25 million to make, on track to be a monstrous moneymaker.

The movie, dubbed "a monster for the MySpace generation" by the The (San Jose) Mercury News, will probably pick up steam over the long weekend on the strength of positive reviews (like ours)." Wired's reporter suggests you "wait out the bombastic soundtrack that rolls under the credits to hear the mysterious words at the end of the film."

The studio did a viral marketing campaign with some fake UFO footage, which was FEATURED HERE back in August - hey, you never know

Here is the trailer:

That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
