A sad story - Microsoft killed it. As a result, Firefox was built in retaliation.

Apple's Safari is a very good browser, but pales in popularity compared to IE. The people who worked at Netscape say that Microsoft killed them. The mythology comes from people like this guy who worked at Netscape as a teenager...and was motivated to build Firefox as a result to what he and others saw Microsoft doing. Here is an article on the Browser Wars.

Netscape sucked.

Dude we all know the browser war history.

Netscape always blamed microsoft for including the browser in the system. Apple always did that as well although mac is not as popular as windows thus safari is less popular compared to IE. If it was apple in microsoft's position they would blame them.

I wasn't using the internet much when Netscape first appeared - I'm just responding to what I've read in response to your question. I haven't heard the Apple gripe before, but Firefox has grown far more rapidly than Safari, and its creators came from the Netscape team.

I don't like all the Microsoft bashing. I brought up the apple example because they would do exactly the same although noone would blame them. Microsoft is always the bad boy.

Botton line is that Netcape died because their product was hardly revelutionary after a while. They also sucked in business. Not Microsoft's fault

Microsoft deserves just as much credit as Apple, if not more, for getting a computer in everyone's house. And I like the fact that Gates is personally giving away his fortune to a foundation - that says a lot about his character.

Vista still sucks. Leopard isn't that great either--yet.

When I first started surfing on 28.8k Dial-up, I used nothing but Netscape. I didn't even know about IE for a long time.

After it began coming "packaged" with windows, I'd simply uninstall it, and install Netscape again.

The beginning of the fade can't just be pegged to Microsoft or Apple, or anything like that. What began the fall was people's web pages back in the Dialup days. A good deal of sites weren't written in a code that supported Netscape browsing. Users were forced to at least run IE as an alternative, and then for convenience, as their main browser.

Following that, you could blame Firefox, as the time, attention, and popularity of non IE browsers on PC fell on them.

Microsoft? Apple?

Neh. We the people are to blame. Both Apple and Microsoft innovate, as did Netscape, but they innovate in ways they think the people want them to be. Mozilla allowed us to shape it ourselves.

nicely said

Another reason is that version 4 was around forever. Even if it was good, people get bored

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
