Violent Femmes Threatening To Sue Each Other

Recommended Posts

violentfemmes.jpgThe Violent Femmes bass player Brian Richie is threatening to sue the group’s lead singer over songwriting royalties.

Richie claims that Gordon Gano – the band’s frontman – has failed to pay him a fair share of the band’s royalties.

The bass player filed the lawsuit on Wednesday at U.S. District Court in New York just two days after the band returned from a series of dates across the world.

The lawsuit says: "This action is the unfortunate culmination of an on-going, intra-band dispute between Richie and Gano over Gano's misappropriation and misadministration of Richie's interests in the jointly-owned songs and assets of the band."

Richie wants Gano to pay him all outstanding past royalties, as well as future ones and damages for the lawsuit.

Reuteurs reports that Gano is "totally surprised" by the lawsuit.

I must admit that I don't understand this because I always thought that jointly composed songs had their profits paid out evenly and separately to each composer.

I know there has been problems with intra-band agreements whereby composers have also allocated themselves an extra share of all the band's earnings so maybe the disagreement is more along those lines.

That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
