method says: give me a few days to search into this. I am terribly busy in real life. I will also talk to Umma in private so she can tell more about this widget thing. Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky too

 Careful what you wish for

Whenever you get the time... the widget should sit nicely in one of the profile sidebars. I assume you can make new blocks for different things? If you can, it should be pretty easy to do...

It would be easier for you if you could just enable a block where they can post their own widget (maybe expand the Personal Statement block to allow embed?.... or even with bb code like the same sort of thing as the youtube code that was added?

and yes... you need to join meebo for it to be any use.

exactly my thought. I am already looking for a way to do that. It will be probably called Custom Box

as you can see, there is a custom tab now but I have to find a way to add content in it. First step is done and have to search around for the next step. It will allow members to add stuff in it.

I am no php expert

Sorry if I'm missing something here, but have we considered just coughing up an existing IM account on AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, MSN or Gmail? I know we have a thread someplace for that. Also, I think we still have #beatbox on IRC that is normally dead.

The truth is out there.

I tend to agree with LOTD.

Although adding a "place" where one could simply embed something like their meebo account, I would have to go in and ONLY allow something like meebo, because leaving it open to ANY embeddable content would simply compromise the website's safety. I recommened making some sort of thread out there and setting a certain number of required number of supporters. If the numbers are decent enough for the BK staff, then I'll add it. I don't just want to simply be adding things left and right that only a handful of users find useful. As someone previously mentioned, there is a place in everyone's profile to add Yahoo!, ICQ, and MSN messenger nicknames. It is their sole discretion to post it or not. That should suffice for now. Until a poll/thread tells me something different.

Sure thing... if it's too much trouble to accommodate... don't put yourself out!

We could always try out the BK chat that BMC(?) has kindly set up on meebo... and since that only needs to be a one of, it shouldn't be any great security risk. It seems a lot simpler than IRC.

Can I tell you something? I don't like the fact that all conversations are logged and you it keeps all conversations there even if those happened a billion years ago

It has a lot of potential for abuse.

We already have a lot of idgits that come here to spam their latest greatest bs.

Here's a suggestion... you could register a BK meebo account and set the chat up on that so all the mods /admins would have access to moderating the goings on. As far as I'm aware, you can ban troublemakers/spammers etc. The chat log part of it becomes private if you make it a private room but then you'll need to supply a password for people to get in.

You can also use the chat for IM as long as somebody's logged in. So it kills all birds with one big boulder.

That is all.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
