With 'Icky Thump', The White Stripes return to form. 'Thump' is a blend of British and Scottish folk music, American rockabilly and garage rock, with a touch of flamenco thrown in for good measure. Notable tracks include, 'Bagpipes', a song which appeared as the soundtrack to a Michel Gondry music video; the Dylan-flavored "300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues"; the Spanish-flavored "Conquest"; and of course the standard rock numbers that the White Stripes are known for: "Ice Cream Soda", "I'm Slowly Turning into you", "Catch Hell Blues, and "You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You're Told)."

I like most of the stuff on the CD, but what the hell is with the button suits? Not very original. It's been done before kids, by John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
