The Four Tops - It's The Same Old Song

Recommended Posts

Ok, we are talking Motown and Soul Music, and therefore, the Four Tops. Founded in Detroit, Michigan as The Four Aims, lead singer Levi Stubbs (a cousin of Jackie Wilson), and groupmates Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Renaldo "Obie" Benson and Lawrence Payton remained together for over four decades. Unlike the other Motown Groups, which usually featured a tenor, the 4 Tops included a barritone. This cut is from around 1965...

You can't beat the classics, I have see the Tops preform a number times once on a bill with the Temptations, damn what a show that was. There music has stood the test of time. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked them #79 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time

I love the Four Tops, Temptations and the Motown sound. I rarely go to concerts so I have never seen them perform.

My loss.

I tell you Red it is an experience I remember for a life time. There are not too many of those groups left if any.

I bought the Four Tops "Christmas Here With You" (1995) cd last week. I hadn't seen it in cyberspace so I broke down and bought it. I may have found it before Christmas but I went ahead and bought it anyway on ebay. Lawrence Payton passed away in 1997 so this may be one of the last (if not the last) cd the original members recorded.

Review by Gina Boldman

This 1995 release, Christmas Here with You, marks the Four Tops' first Christmas album — features classic holiday songs such as "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Away in a Manger," "Christmas Song," "Little Drummer Boy," "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," and "Merry Christmas, Baby." Aretha Franklin supplies vocals on two tracks — "White Christmas" and "Silent Night" — which just adds to this predictable but festive holiday release.

I am actually a Temptations (David Ruffin) fan who also loves the Four Tops ( lots of other groups). This is a clip I really enjoy a lot:

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
