Gig review:GOMEZ

Recommended Posts

British act GOMEZ were amazing, reports reviewer Vicki Anderson. Shame about one of the opening acts, then....

Opening local act Dukes kicked off the evening to a large, responsive crowd with a bright set of well-executed songs from both their debut album Lil' Sunshine and upcoming yet-to- be-released album.

Expect to hear more from this talented group.

Then, bizarrely, it was time to journey into the scary world of karaoke/cabaret with mockumentary TV star Wayne Anderson.

As Anderson informed us during his hip-swivelling, unintentional shadow-puppet performance on the balcony and to the deafening boos from the audience, he has appeared on the Good Morning Show and also has a DVD out.

Anderson sang songs by the Monkees, Tony Christie and Tom Jones (thankfully no-one threw underwear). Frankly, it was brutal.

The best of British then strolled nonchalantly onto the stage. Gomez were simply stunning.

They've been together since the '90s and it shows. The five-piece produced the best hour and a half of live music that I've seen in a long time. Munching on only Pineapple Lumps for sustenance they tore through a blistering set of songs from albums Bring It On, Liquid Skin and their most recent, How We Operate.

Highlights included Fill My Cup, Detroit Swing 66, Chasing Ghosts with Alcohol, Whippin' Picadilly and my personal favourite live version, Here Comes The Breeze.

Deafening whistling, stomping and applause from an enraptured audience saw Gomez return to perform three encores before ending with their classic hit Get Myself Arrested.

A night to remember.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
