Your EDM Premiere: NËU Music’s Newest Discovery Maysev Brings the Syncopated Drums

Listen to about 15 seconds of the forthcoming EP Onward from Maysev, due out on NËU Music this Friday, and you’ll know exactly why this largely unknown artist landed a full EP with the imprint on his very first release. Experimental, syncopated, drums-based sound science bouncing off every wall is likely what one would find if one entered the respective neral studios that banter around in Phace and Misanthrop’s heads. There’s no way they would let this one get away with drums like that and a label like NËU.

Teaming up with fellow NËU alums Matens and Secula on two of the tracks, Maysev more than holds his own on the spicy Onward and shows, despite being a bit of a neophyte, he’s definitely earned his place with the exacting German imprint. From the punishing, incredibly complex opening track “Tunnel Drive” with Matens whose melody is even made out of drumlines to the startlingly emotional and Kraftwerk-inspired 174 techno of “All Out” to the heavy, cinematic sound design on “Koram” with Secula, Onward is not only clean and expertly produced, it’s incredibly diverse.

Our premiere today is the closing track on Onward is “Realize,” another stunning emotive and also somehow jaunty foray into playing with drums. Cut apparently at 161 BPM, “Realize” has an interesting hip hop-style groove to it that once again shows Maysev’s diversity: he’s techy enough, clearly, to hang with the neuro and experimental giants of the scene but he can also marry true rhythm with all those other elements. This track also really highlights the cinematic, almost ambient synth work Maysev is capable of which really ties the EP together and likely will galvanize this young upstart’s place in the scene faster than even he expects.

If this is the 20-year-old Maysev’s starting point for production, the bass music world had better get ready: he’s about to change the game. Onward being tailor-made for NËU’s ultimate drumline fantasy EP aside, the production chops on this artist are genuinely only limited by time and his own imagination.

Onward EP drops in full this Friday, September 17. Click here to pre-order or pre-save on multiple platforms.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
