Hey. Wish there was a "music general" forum in which to post this, because I can't seem to find the ideal section.

Anyway.

I'm looking very specifically for albums that are experimental BUT still boast actual songs (with hooks, verses, choruses, etc.). So please don't go Brian Eno or Godspeed You Black Emperor on me ;)

Good examples would be:

INXS's "The Swing"

U2's "Achtung Baby"

Nine Inch Nails's "Pretty Hate Machine"

David Bowie's "Low" (but only the first side)

All these IMO are great albums that explored new musical grounds, while managing to retain catchy hooks, normal song structures, etc.

I'm desperately trying to find more, as these seem to be a rare breed! Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hmmm. I like challenges. Let me give your question some thought and give you some good suggestions. The following were considered experimental when they were first released, so I will start with those

The Byrds - Notorious Byrd Brothers

The Beatles - Revolver

Bob Dylan - Highway 61

The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed

Talking Heads - 77

Led Zeppelin - Zeppelin (there was nothing like it, when it was first released)

King Crimson - Return of the Crimson King

The Velvet Undergound with Nico

The Clash - The Clash

The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet

Here are a couple more recent releases for starters - not as popular, but they fit your definition

Jeremy Enigk - Return of the Frog Queen

Sigur Ros - Takk, Ágætis Byrjun

Royksopp - The Understanding

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

Zero 7 - The Garden

Air - Talkie Walkie (Mostly instrumental, but some of the cuts have vocals; their upcoming cd, Pocket Symphony, features Jarvis Cocker and other guests, and fits your bill

New Artists

Doveman - Acrobat

Jed and Lucia - Candles In The Daylight

Colin C (Samples From Upcoming Album)

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
