In Steve Miller's "The Joker," what is "the pompatus of love"?

In 1954 a group called the Medallions recorded a song called "The Letter" which caught Steve Allen's attention. There was no printed score available, and Vernon Green's performance of the song (which he also wrote) included a couple of words that he made up, and which were transcribed incorrectly by those who tried it. According to Green (who was 14 when he wrote the song), what was transcribed as "pompitous" or "pompatus" was actually "puppetute." This was, according to Green, "a term I coined to mean a secret paper-doll fantasy figure [thus puppet], who would be my everything and bear my children."

That song has always made me think of an older Lincoln Continental. The kind where the back doors open the wrong way. It was white, with a black roof. There's a member here who knows exactly what I'm talking about!!

Does Rosie like you talkin about your "member" like that online?

I mean, a regal lady like herself would only know of this backseat you speak of if she were chauffer driven.

As she well deserves!! But the car I'm talking about was her father's car when we were in high school.

The back seat of said car is a whole different discussion. One that we won't go into here!!

my first car was a 64 Lincoln w/the assbackwards doors. my then-BF got it for 400$ years after. 3 days later it died on me and then he got me a 66 T-bird which lasted for about 10 years, well into the 80s. people were always coming up to me in gas stations and wanting to buy it. :)

This here was my first car. [not the actual one pictured, but the same- even color]

1966 Plymouth Valiant

- for that matter, I still own it. It would need @ 3K to run again, but it had a certain style.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
