My movie marathon

Last night I watched 3 movies in a row. The new Superman, Phycho remake and some really cool karate movie.

Superman was better than I expected. The special effects were super and it was nice to finally watch Superman like that. This scene was one of the best movie scenes ever IMO. Especially the slo-mo bullet hitting his eye

Brilliance!

The second movie was the Phycho remake. It was by far the worst remake ever and one of the worst movies of all time. Hitchcock would never allow this crap to be released. Pure vommit.

The third movie was some old Chinese martial arts film. Pure magic. Lips moving more than needed, people flying and kicking and all that. What more can someone ask?

Earlier this week I watched Midnight Cowboy, John Schlesinger's Academy-Award winning film from 1969, which starred Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight. It's probably been about 20 years since I last saw it, and I was stunned at how captivating it still was. If you've never seen it before, do yourself a favor and rent this one...it's on my Hall of Fame list.

Saw the documentary Waco: The Rules of Engagement tonight at the Screen Actors Guild, which a friend of mine made about 5 years ago. The role of the FBI and the ATF was absolutely disgusting-- - the authorities who raided and eventurally destroyed the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, and in the process murdered 86 innocent men, women and children , should all be in jail for their participation in this catastrophe. The film documents the event from the beginning to the end, as well as the subsequent coverup. Roger Ebert sums up my feelings fairly accurately.

I'm also particularly disturbed by the role of the Clinton White House in this affair, who called the military into this situation. My general postive feelings about Clinton, have just been lowered a notch, and I have lots of questions about the White House's involvement in this mess.

What did you think of Babel?

I thought it was interesting in that it told 3 separate stories. You might want to check it out and see if its your cup or tea or not

Saw The King of Scotland tonight, the epic story about Idi Amin. Forest Whittaker will win and academy award for best actor and he deserves it.

Just caught The Departed and Idiocracy. I'm thinking either Pan's Labyrinth or Children of Men next.

I somehow came across this documentary tonight on Google video about the fathers of psychology and public relations and how they shaped the 20th century by manipulating the masses. While our society appear to be based on democracratic and free market-based on the surface, where everybody has a chance of making a difference, the reality is anything but. Those in power just adjust to the times and apply different techniques to manipulate us to buy their products and keep themselves in power. Interesting stuff...

The Century of Self

The first episode explores the relationship between Sigmund Freud and his American nephew, Edward Bernays, who invented the public relations profession in the 1920s and was the first person to take Freud's ideas to manipulate the masses. He showed American corporations (and the CIA) how they could link mass-produced goods and ideas to people's unconscious desires.

***

Part II is really, really interesting. It takes a look at how the father of PR used his techniques to scare the American people that a communist threat existed in Guatemala, that led to a CIA/United Fruit-led coup...once the American media and people were manipulated by fear. Same techniques were and continue to be used by the Bush Administration. The general philosophy is that the people are irrational and need to be led. The initial philosophy was in reaction to what had happened in Nazi Germany, and the creators felt that their manipulations would save the American people from falling into the same dark patterns LOL

***

The third part of this documentary explores how the rebellious attitudes against social restriction and towards individuality, led to a corporate revolution to create products that mirrored the individual's self-expression and lifestyle pursuits. And the strategy for this move came out of a group of psychologists from California, who revolted against the social control that Freudian psychologists preached.

***

The fourth and final episode shows how politicians on the left, in both Britain and America, utilized the manipulative techniques developed by business (and modern psychologists) to fulfill people's inner desires.

While they believed they were creating a better democracy, they didn't realise that they were using the very tools that had been devised to liberate people but to control them. Clinton and Blair for instance used focus groups to appeal to the swing voters concerns at the expense of everyone else to win; the downside being that they had to change their politics to win, even when it went against their ideals, based upon the focus group's whims of the moment (and subject to rapid change depending on when they were polled)

The thesis being that by appealing to people's desires and fears, rather than people's rational thoughts, they were creatiing a society in which individual greed instead of what was better for the overall good.

***

Everyone should watch this when they get a chance - it explains lots of things about how society evolved - this is probably the most important film i have seen this year

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
