In its article "Attack of the Zombie Computers Is a Growing Threat, Experts Say", the NY Times warns the bad guys are winning:

"In their persistent quest to breach the Internet’s defenses, the bad guys are honing their weapons and increasing their firepower.

With growing sophistication, they are taking advantage of programs that secretly install themselves on thousands or even millions of personal computers, band these computers together into an unwitting army of zombies, and use the collective power of the dragooned network to commit Internet crimes.

These systems, called botnets, are being blamed for the huge spike in spam that bedeviled the Internet in recent months, as well as fraud and data theft."

it's funny how mass media writes about stuff that everyone already knows, months or years later

i don't think it's funny, i just think they're idiots --- this shit has been gone on, over and over on sites like slashdot and c|net et al, for ages. if they're writing for the 'masses' they should get a fucking clue and keep up w/blogs and tech sites. it kills me these clueless fuckwits actually get paid for their old 'news.'

I remember some of the IRC room botnets on DALnet. I also remember when I stumbled upon a botnet on p2pchat when they forgot to put their room to invisible. 5 minutes later the network went down, and didn't go back up for a week lol.

      You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention. 
      But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
