Bush signing may mean government can read your mail

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A signing statement attached to postal legislation by President Bush last month may have opened the way for the government to open mail without a warrant.

The White House denies any change in policy.

The law requires government agents to get warrants to open first-class letters.

But when he signed the postal reform act, Bush added a statement saying that his administration would construe that provision "in a manner consistent, to the maximum extent permissible, with the need to conduct searches in exigent circumstances. ..."

"The signing statement raises serious questions whether he is authorizing opening of mail contrary to the Constitution and to laws enacted by Congress," said Ann Beeson, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union.

On a more serious note, I have never seen an individual who posesses such high level contempt for the rules of law. However, Congress has the authority to pass bills deeming Bush's signing statements illegal. Of course, Chimpy McFlightsuit will veto it and if it happens to secure a 2/3 vote in Congress, he will ultimately challenge all the way up to the US Supreme Court.

i actually thought they were doing this shit months ago, thought i read about it on one of the political sites i used to tear my hair out over every day. thank fuck i have more mundane things to keep my head on lately (although i /have/ lost any political 'edge' i might've had. fuck it, not worth it, my sanity and physical health comes first)

personally, i think we should ALL write death threats and shit...we'll never be able to get the numbers up high enough (cause most people are pussies) but imagine them opening up millions of letters to find the same murderous threats and shit. what are they gonna do? go after EACH AND EVERY one of US?
