My Beef with Soulseek

Soulseek is a great program, it truely is. My main beef with it (other than obnoxious people who set too many rules to download from them), is the fact that the server tends to go down a lot.

It never fails. I am sitting in a queue for many hours and *bang* the whole soulseek server goes down. I check the status page and sure enough

"probing server... failed.

the server seems to be down."

I sometimes have lost my queue position while the server was down.

That's a beef with a lot of queues in P2P apps with only one source downloading. I get this not as much on IRC, but sometimes.

Damn that centralized server model <_>

yes, the server goes down a lot but that doesn't push away people who look for really rare electro (mostly) stuff. The community there is excellent, the search results are excellent (due to the fact that it's a central server network) and those who mind about the server failures are mainstream music seekers only. Those users have to go. The soulseek people don't want their client to turn into a popular one cause it can be shot down in a sec (central server) that's why you'll hear them say "don't like it? Then go!". They just want a client for harcore electro fans and I like that!

I love Soulseek

On a slow connection, I think it's the best for actually getting things completed.

All you need is a little patience!!

I've found the best success on Soulseek was to get into groups relating to the music you liked and become a trusted member. The only way I could function on SS was to do that and limit my sharing to people I trusted and dealt with a lot. Otherwise all the deadbeats would hog all your bandwidth to the point that those who you shared with wouldn't be able to get anything from you. By limiting the number of people who can DL from you at once, it creates long lines, but it's necessary to do that....I'm sure you've Dl from people at a rate of less than 1...they allow too many people DL from them and don't have the bandwidth to back it up.

Soulseek is the best thing out there. I like to able be to control my shares so the greedy leechers are left without, as it should be. If you really have a problem with the queues, toss a few bucks Soulseeks way and become a privledged user. So what if the server is down from time to time? It gives me the chance to organise my dowloads, add more shares, and burn CD's for back up, etc. I take advantage of those downtimes.

try donating to Nir (Soulseeks author)...then you get to go to the head of the queue every time.

Makes Soulseek much more enjoyable...especially when server turbulence occurs.

No, I could not donate for every Soulseek username I have.

'Privledged' status isn't worth that much. ;)

no it doesnt...

Uhhh... yes it does.

Sometimes it is down six times in a 24-hour-period. I should know... i used to 56k it and leave it on for two or three days straight.

Server problems aside, I think the program is lovely. I love the chat, I think it may have some of the most intelligent and literate chatters of all chats I know. Plus, it is nice to know that if something is unavailable for the moment, the person will be back (and sometimes even tell you that before they go offline).

Plus, it is good to be able to find music to which you can listen. I like the independent music predominantly, and SS is where it is at (and HQ!!).

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
