Pentagon investigates soldiers' YouTube clips

The US Department of Defence is currently investigating questionable conduct by its soldiers in Iraq, as evidenced by personal videos, captured by the soldiers themselves, which have made their way to YouTube.

One of the videos shows a soldier holding a bottle of water out the back of a moving vehicle, as thirsty Iraqi children chase after it.

"You want some water? ... keep running!," says the soldier, who eventually throws the bottle to the children after watching them chase the vehicle for over a minute.

Another video shows soldiers driving through hostile Iraqi territory as children throw rocks at their vehicle.

"Alright this is the corner where little shits like to throw rocks at us," says a soldier, who goes on to lament the fact that he's unauthorised to open fire on them.

"According to our first sergeants, we are not authorised to engage these little bastards, so I'm not even gonna have my weapon out the window and we're just going to video tape these little shits basically destroying our vehicles."

He repeatedly shouts profanities from the vehicle, such as "fuck you, you little shit" and "little fuckers".

A US Department of Defence spokesman said in an email that "these incidents are under investigation", and if identified the soldiers could face charges.

"The DoD does not condone this behaviour.

"The identities of the individuals are unknown; if found they could face charges."

The user that posted the first video to YouTube said they received it from "someone who was over there [in Iraq]", and noted that it was part of a disc full of other personal videos he'd received.

The Herald obtained this disc, but the majority of the other videos contained on it appear to be innocent.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
